IN MEMORY OF MARGARET ANN McGARRY WOODBURN "PEGGY" Class of 1960

1942 - 7/12/12

Thomas William and Mary Catherine (Riordan) McGarry, while living in Blythe, California, welcomed their first born, Peggy, into their family. After leaving the oil company where Tom worked, they moved to Eagle Rock, California where brother Mike was born. Her sister, Maureen, arrived after their move to Lennox/Inglewood, California.

Peggy went to Whelan School in Lennox for kindergarten, spent 8 years at St. Joseph Catholic School in Hawthorne, one year at St. Michael’s High School and then onto Lennox High School-Class of 1960. Lennox was the newly opened public high school in walking distance. While in high school, she was active in the Latin Club (short lived) and Pep Club.

After High School, Peggy quickly got herself a job with Max Factor in Hollywood, California, dyed her hair red - never to be a brunette again, rented her first apartment with her best friend, Sandy Hough Mann, and bought her first car - a used 1957 Chevy convertible. She was independent and having a great time living out on her own.

Peggy met her husband, Jim Woodburn, at the Wich Stand, a local drive-in/restaurant. When asked how they met, he said, “I just started talking to her.” And, when asked if she was the prettiest one there, Jim said, “Well, I thought so!” They were married on September 21, 1963, and lived in Westchester, California. After their son, Danny, was born in 1964, Peggy was a stay-at-home Mom. Her daughter, Robin, was born in 1965 and their family was complete.

In 1976, the Woodburn’s moved to Vista, California, to open Paine Oil Company, a new family gas station and business. Peggy supported Jim in their business, helped with the kid’s activities and began making many new friends. She was delighted when the grandchildren came along and she could help with them -- it was never baby sitting to her. She cherished her faith community at St. Francis Catholic Church and was eager to serve.

Peggy returned to the workplace with various companies and retied from Amerigas after more than 20 years. Shortly after retirement, she began the difficult journey of living with Alzheimer’s. Her journey on earth ended on July 21, 2012. With her family at her side, God received her into his loving arms.

Peggy is survived by her husband, Jim Woodburn; son, Danny Woodburn; daughter, Robin Ike; son-in-law, Derek Ike; grandchildren, Frankie Vazquez, Joey Vasquez, Emily Woodburn and Whitnee Ike; great-grandson, Grayson Ike; Sister and brother-in-law, Maureen and Jim O’Day and nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her parents, Tom and Mary McGarry and brother, Mike McGarry.

Our family wishes to thank you for your love, support and prayers for Peggy and her family during the last few years of her illness and especially during this difficult time.

~ Maureen McGarry O'Day
