Renna Ray Smothers, age 66, went to be with her Lord Thursday, April 23, 2009 in her home in Apple Valley.
Renna was born Dec. 10, 1942 in Paris, Texas to Ray and Molly Christine Robertson. As a child she lived eight years in Fairbanks, Alaska. Her family moved to California in 1957. Renna graduated from Lennox High School in Lennox in 1961. On Feb. 8, 1964 Renna married her high school sweetheart Keith Smothers. She was so proud of her marine. She would always go out of her way to thank any marine, or any other serviceman she might meet for their service to our country. Keith and Renna were married for 45 years. In 1981 they moved to Apple Valley. Renna retired from Pacific Telephone after 20 years of service. She began a new career with Southern California Gas Company and retired from there in 2000. Renna loved life. She loved to laugh and was always ready to have fun. More than that, she loved her Lord. She loved singing His praises along with other choir members at Victorville First Assembly of God Church where she was a member for many years. She always loved to help and she spent many hours volunteering doing "background work" for the choir. When she wasn't working at the church Renna was a volunteer at St. Mary Hospital in Apple Valley. Renna also loved being treasurer in her TOPS club where she made many friends. Although Renna and Keith never had children of their own they helped raise their niece Christine and nephews Raymond and Bud.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father and nephew Raymond. She is survived by husband Keith; sister Sharon Cocuzza of Oakland; mother-in-law Margaret Smothers "Mom" of Perry, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; and her two chihuahuas, Dixie Bell Star Rose and Sissy.
Memorial services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, April, 29 in the chapel at Victorville First Assembly of God Church, 15260 Nisqualli Road in Victorville, at the corner of Balsam and Nisqualli roads. Interment is pending.

My really good and close friend Renna passed away last Thursday, April 23, 2009 from lung cancer. She never smoked. Her breast cancer from several years before came back on the other side from her original breast cancer and went into her lungs. She was diagnosed as terminal 2 months ago. When I had a phone call on my cell today from a gal who I did not know, asking me to call Keith (Renna's husband), I felt to expect the worse. However, I thought I was going to be told she died from a major stroke, as she had suffered a medium TIA aboout 1 & 1/2 years ago. Her thought process was a litte ratteled ever since. I'm going to miss her so much. Over the past several years, we only saw each other about once a year, due to the miles between us. Renna is one of those friends you carry in your heart always. I send my love with her on her journey to the next plain of everlasting life.
