Joanne was the daughter of John Paul Zwick and Nora Bertine Stanger, who were from Stark Co., North Dakota and married in Wilbaux, Montana in 1941. Joanne Magdalena Zwick was born November 22, 1942 in Dickinson, North Dakota, her middle name taken after her paternal grandmother, Magdalena Duckhorn Zwick. Her Zwick grandparents and her father were German immigrants from Hungary in 1912.

After her graduation from Lennox in 1961, Joanne got her RN at California Hospital in Los Angeles in 1964. A year later, she and a fellow nurse/roommate relocated to Colorado, where they worked at the University of Colorado Medical Center. Joanne married Don Dethmers in 1967.  They lived in Lakewood, Colorado, a suburb of Denver, and had 2 boys, as I recall..

Joanne died from an allergic reaction of some sort, on February 15, 1995, at the young age of 52.
