Man stopped on side of Interstate 5 near Salem suffered heart attack, died later at hospital

Oregon State Police said a man who was found in his car Saturday on the side of Interstate 5 near Salem was suffering from a heart attack and later died at a Salem hospital.
Toopers reportedly found Jeffrey Nivala, 54, of Keizer, in his car, which was stopped along the northbound lanes of the interstate, near milepost 253, just before 6 p.m. Nivala had suffered a heart attack and was taken to the hospital in Salem where he later died.
State police spokesman Lt. Gregg Hastings said the death is not suspicious. Troopers are finishing the investigation. The Salem Fire Department assisted state police.

Dr. Jeffrey Nivala, an optometrist with Binyon’s Optical in Heritage Mall, died Oct. 30.
Nivala, 54, was found in his car near milepost 253 in the northbound lanes of I-5 in Salem. His car was stopped on the side of the freeway.
Oregon State Police troopers found Nivala around 6 p.m. after he had apparently suffered a heart attack.
Nivala, who lived in Keizer, had been working at Binyon’s in Albany since June of this year and had worked as an optometrist in the area for more than two years.

Jeffrey Nivala class of 1974 has Passed away. My heart is with Elva his wife & his family in this time of tragedy. Jeff was a great man.
