Ramona's Obituary

Ramona Robles (Sanchez) Martinez, 61, passed away peacefully on Thursday May 19th, 2022 at her home in Hawthorne, California. She is survived by her brothers Mario and Rudy, her children Daniel, Gregory, and Melissa, her daughters-in-law Isabel and Morgan, and her two grandchildren Penelope and Eloise.

She is preceded in life by her mother Maryjane, her father Rafael, her sister Rachel Robles (July 31, 1958 - May 12, 2003, and her brother Robert N Medina Sr. (January 11, 1955 - August 7, 1999).

Ramona was born January 21st, 1961 in Bakersfield, California to the late Rafael R. (September 9, 1925 - August 8, 2013) and Mary Jane Robles, nee Ponce (July 21, 1935 - February 15, 2015), Sanchez. In 1970, the family, including older sister Rachael, moved to Lennox, California when Rafael got an opportunity to work at LAX with United Airlines.

Ramona grew up in Lennox, attending Larch Ave Elementary, Buford Jr. High and Lennox High School, graduating in 1979. Throughout her school years, she forged friendships that would last a lifetime and met her future husband at Lennox.

Ramona married Ramon Regis Martinez (Lennox '79) soon after graduating. The couple settled in Burbank, California before returning to Hawthorne, California the passing of Ramon's father in 1986. Ramona and Ramon had three children, Daniel, Greg and Melissa, until separating in 1991 and divorced in 1992 after 12 year of marriage.

Ramona was an amazing mom. When she wasn't rushing home to retrieve a forgotten glove or hockey stick, you could find her running the snack bar or managing a league fund raiser. She always volunteered as a team mom or coach for the various teams the kids played on. She set high expectations and standards for her family, while making sure her children had everything they needed. As a single mom, Ramona raised her kids with traditional values, always focusing on kindness and generosity towards others.

Ramona continued her work in education when she took a job at the Lennox School District as an instructional aide. She made great friends and memories during her time there, but she also gained many skills that made her a valuable member of her team. She later took her talents to the Lawndale Elementary School District where she served in the accounting department as an accounts payable and payroll clerk. During her time there, she gained leadership positions in the LESD classified employee union as both treasurer and vice president. She was always concerned with ensuring that the workplace was fair and equitable for all. She retired in 2020 after 25 years of service.

Ramona loved the outdoors. Upon her retirement she hit the road with her boyfriend Bill Gerten of Hawthorne, CA. Together, they traveled in a 5th wheel trailer stopping at national parks across the US. The couple also travelled internationally including a trip to Puerto Rico where Ramona reconnected with distant relatives and fulfill a promise to lay her father's ashes to rest in his homeland. When she wasn't traveling, Ramona volunteered her time at the Hawthorne Moose Lodge. She happily served the community and supported the lodge's fundraising efforts.

She is remembered for being friendly and outgoing. She was the life of the party. She had a good time by making sure that everyone else was having a good time. She loved to laugh and wasn't afraid to make fun of herself. She was known for being selfless. She had a kind and generous heart. She always had a place at the table or a bed to sleep on for anyone that may needed it. She made good memories and great friends everywhere she went.

She will forever be loved and missed.

Thanks, ~ Ramon "Ray" Martinez, Class of '79
